Double duty as Garrido will also take charge of U-20 squad

PETALING JAYA: Juan Torres Garrido will have double duty in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

The Spaniard, who has been coaching the Malaysia Under-23 since October, will now lead the Under-20 team.

FAM, through their executive committee, announced the news after chairing the 10th executive committee at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

“The FAM Executive Committee have approved that Juan Torres will handle the national Under-20 team as head coach,” said FAM deputy president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi.

“The Under-20 team will take part in the AFF Championship scheduled for June 2024 and the AFC Qualifiers tournament in Sept 2024.”

As for the Under-23 team, FAM said during their centralised camp in March, they are looking to organise some friendly games before the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar, which will be held from April 15 to May 3.

FAM technical director Scott O’Donell said there are challenges for the team but they look to resolve them by next week.

“We are in the process of putting up a programme. It’s not easy because we have some challenges with the FIFA dates and the competition is on April 17,” said O’Donell.

“We have not made a decision to confirm the dates for the friendlies.

“The team will get together in March. We will have a training camp and will finalise the matches in the next week or so.

“We have options to travel overseas before the tournament but we are hoping to go to Qatar early. That’s something we have to finalise soon.”
