Police must ‘arrest’ excitement of Challenge Cup glory to meet target in Super League

Keeping ’em on their toes: Police’s Nigerian striker Uche Agba believes the team will refocus when they take on minnows Kelantan in the Super League today.

PETALING JAYA: It has been a week since Police lifted the Challenge Cup but the celebration has not stopped.

But Nigerian striker Uche Agba believes the team will refocus when they take on minnows Kelantan in the Super League match at the Petaling Jaya Stadium today.

The Cops had won the Challenge Cup after beating Kuching City 4-1 on aggregate on Dec 3.

Today, a win against Kelantan will see them close the gap with sixth-placed Terengganu, who have 37 points from 25 games.

Police are in eighth spot with 34 points from 24 matches. Kuala Lumpur also have 34 points but have a better goal difference to be placed seventh.

The side led by Datuk Yunos Alif are aiming to finish in the top six of the league.

Agba admitted that the boys were still in celebratory mood after the Challenge Cup success but hoped to ride on the momentum to get a good result in the Super League.

“The mindset of the players may not be at the best at the moment because everyone is still excited after the Challenge Cup win,” said the 37-year-old, who has had the experience of playing in top leagues in Tunisia and Bahrain.

“We are not extremely focused but I believe we will gather the momentum soon.

“Kelantan may not be having the best time but their young boys are working hard, so that’s something we have to be mindful of.

“We want to win and end the season in style, hopefully finishing as high as sixth.”

Agba said the team have been doing well throughout the season despite their modest budget because of competition within the team.

“I think we have a good blend of young and experienced players. All are equal.

“The competition within the team has seen Police excel. Everyone has a fair playing chance and has given their best effort for the club.”
