Canaries hope to hit new heights with Olusegun and Atede

PETALING JAYA: Kedah have bolstered their squad for the Super League and Malaysia Cup by signing former Super League Golden Boot winner Ifedayo Olusegun and ex-Bahrain Premier League player Moses Atede.

The Canaries, coached by Nafuzi Zain, have decided to make reinforcements for the second transfer window by signing both the Nigerians, who hold Bahraini passports.

In a statement issued by the club, they said Olusegun and Atede signed a deal for the remainder of the 2023 season. Both players will be listed under the Asian quota for the season. Olusegun’s signing is to compensate for the departure of Brazilian striker Willian Lira, who left on mutual consent.

“Ifedayo is no stranger to the Malaysian League. With his experience with Felda United, Melaka and Selangor among the factors influencing the management’s choice, it will make it easier for him to adapt to the team,” said the statement from the club.

Olusegun, 32, won the Golden Boot in 2020 and 2021 when he played for Selangor, scoring a total of 38 goals in those two seasons, earning him the nickname ‘’King Dayo’’.

As for Atede, he made his name in the Bahrain Premier League, playing for sides like Al-Hidd and Al-Muharraq.

In 2021, the 25-year-old helped Muharraq win the AFC Cup and last season, he was hailed as one of the best midfielders in the league.

In their foreign player stable, Kedah have Serbian centreback Bojan Ciger, South African centreback Alan Robertson, Tajikistani midfielder Amirbek Juraboev, Filipino midfielder Manuel Ott, Argentine winger Manuel Hidalgo, Brazilian striker Jonathan Balotelli and Ghanaian striker Ebenezer Assifuah.

Last week, Lira left the club despite being the team’s top scorer in the Super League. It is learnt that he could be moving to Thailand or Vietnam to continue his career.
