PETALING JAYA: Kelantan United’s ex-Selangor flanker Syazwan Zainon is feeling the wind beneath his wings as he’s plotting an upset over his former team at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru today.
Syazwan, who played for the Red Giants from 2019 to 2020, and his teammates are thinking big after being inspired by Police’s 1-0 stunner over Tan Cheng Hoe’s men last Saturday.
The Green Deer are also in high spirits after beating their ‘’big brother’’ Kelantan 4-1.
Syazwan scored the fourth goal in that handsome win, and the 33-year-old veteran is in the mood to inflict more misery on Selangor by leading them to a shocking win.
“Scoring against Kelantan is the best motivation for me ahead of the big game against Selangor. Now, we must continue that momentum,’’ he said.
“If Police also can shock Selangor, I believe we can do the same.
“They are second in the league, and we’re in 12th spot but we won’t be intimidated by that.’’
Syazwan, however, is aware of the major challenge ahead as he will be up against wingbacks much younger than him.
If he plays on the left, he will face either Quentin Cheng, 23, or Ahmad Zikri Khalili, 20, and on the right, he has either Fazly Mazlan, 29, or V. Ruventhiran, 21 to contend with.
“I’m turning 34 soon and this will be a severe test for me. I’ve to use my technique more and not speed.”
Syazwan’s teammate, wingback Fandi Othman, also has a battle of his own as he has to contain Selangor’s mercurial winger Faisal Halim.
“I’ve faced him (Faisal) before, when I was playing for other teams. I hope we both can have a good game and a duel to remember too,’’ said Fandi.
Second-place Selangor have 28 points from 13 matches while Kelantan United lie 12th with six points.
