Safawi hopes to see more regular action in Thailand

PETALING JAYA: National winger Safawi Rasid (pic) hopes his sojourn in Thailand will lead to more regular appearances in the Super League.

On Sunday, it was announced that the 25-year-old would be joining Thai League One club Ratchaburi on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim.

Safawi said that for his age, he should be getting more regular action instead of warming the bench.

This season, he made 23 appearances for the Southern Tigers but only started in three games.

“Ratchaburi’s president (Boonying Nitikarnchana) wanted my services, and I appreciate that. I can’t wait to play in the Thai league but first, I want to focus on the AFF Mitsubishi Cup (Dec 20 to Jan 16) with Harimau Malaya,” he said.

“But when I am with Ratchaburi, I will surely give my best. The Thai League is a league that emphasises ball possession and speedy plays. For me, it is the best place to regain my form.

“I’m 25 now and I need to play more regularly. After my loan with Ratchaburi, I will look for a team that need me. I don’t want to sit on the bench anymore. I want to play.”

Safawi, who is one of Malaysia’s four captains for the AFF Mitsubishi Cup, said he first needs to have a good outing in that tournament.

“This is the best place to showcase my talents. I’m proud the national team have called me up, so I want to prove something.’’
