Bergson nets record 27, but he’s hungry for more

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) striker Bergson da Silva has set a new Super League record with the most goals scored in a single season but he is not stopping at 27.

The Brazilian striker scored a brace to help JDT beat Kedah 4-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Sultan in Iskandar Puteri on Tuesday to take his tally in the Super League to 27.

The previous record was set by Nigerian striker Ifedayo Olusegun with 26 goals while playing for Selangor last season.

This means da Silva has now scored 50 goals in total since moving to JDT from Brazilian club Fortaleza in 2021.

The Brazilian missed the match against Pahang last week due to the red card he received in the earlier clash against Kedah at Darul Aman Stadium.

The 27 goals produced by him so far meant he has scored more goals than PJ City, Melaka, Sarawak and Penang this season.

The 31-year-old is virtually set to walk away as the winner of the Golden Boot Award as nearest rival Herlison Caion of Brazil has only scored 14 goals for Selangor so far.

Apart from 27 goals in the Super League competition, da Silva has also scored six goals in the AFC Champions League stage for JDT – all scored in the group stage – in addition to four more goals scored in the FA Cup competition.

Altogether, he has produced a total of 37 goals this season for JDT.

“I give my best every day, every match. I am proud about everything (the results and my teammates) and how we play.

“We have one more game to go but I already broke my personal record. I am happy but it’s not enough. We are always hungry for results,” he said.
