Lets aim for a spot in the AFC Cup, Jimmy tells the Deer

PETALING JAYA: Let’s not waver from the team’s target to get to the AFC Cup next year, reminds Negri Sembilan centreback Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee.

With three games left in the Super League, the Deer are currently fourth with 35 points and are just a point behind second-placed Sabah.

Terengganu also have 35 points but are third thanks to a better goal difference.

To qualify for the AFC Cup, teams must finish second or third in the Super League, and Khuzaimi hopes they can win their next three matches.

Earlier this year, the team coached by K. Devan just targeted a respectable finish in the top divisions but have defied expectations.

But last weekend, they were thrashed by Johor Darul Ta’zim 5-0, and many questioned Devan’s tactics.

Nevertheless, Khuzaimi, believes they can bounce back against Kedah at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi tomorrow.

“I didn’t play against JDT the other day due to my suspension. I could see that my mates tried their best, but it was not meant to be,” said the 29-year-old.

“Now that I am back, I will do my best to help my team go all out in the last three matches of the league. We aim not to drop points because our mission is to play in the AFC Cup next season.”

Khuzaimi’s sparkling performances for Negri in the Super League have got fans talking.

The left-footed player has a penchant for taking free kicks and is comfortable in a two or three-man defence.

Fondly known as Jimmy, he exudes calmness and is not one to make hasty clearances or tackles.

Khuzaimi said Devan was a coach who does not simply tinker with his tactical ways for fun.

“The coach has his plan, and he always discusses it with his players first. We’ve not had issues with it, even for the game against JDT.

“Yes, the huge scoreline wasn’t good, but I know the coach has done the best for the team. The boys gave it their all.

“That’s why we have the belief that we can bounce back against Kedah this Friday in front of our home fans.”
