Caion confident Cheng Hoe will make big strides with Red Giants

SHAH ALAM: For any professional player, training under three different coaches in a season can be tricky, but Selangor striker Herlison Caion (pic) is not bothered by it.

Instead, the Brazilian has warmed up to the ways of new coach Tan Cheng Hoe by saying that he likes his style of football and believes they have what it takes to turn around their topsy-turvy form.

Caion, who turned 32 yesterday, said the experience of the former national coach had a positive effect on the players.

“Yes, it is always tricky for the players to adapt to new ways. But in professional football, it is a phase you must go through. Maybe the younger players would find it tough, but I have no problems with it,” said the former Chonburi striker.

“Coach Cheng Hoe has a lot of experience, and we are adapting to his ways well. The mood is good after the 5-0 win against Melaka on Sunday. Everyone is happy and motivated for the next game.”

When asked about Selangor’s inconsistency this season, where they have won six, drawn five and lost eight to be eighth with 23 points, Caion agreed that it had been an issue with the side.

But he feels that Cheng Hoe will remedy it.

“The problem is inconsistency. Some games were good, some were not. We need good results every game. The fans wait for good results because Selangor is a big club. All the players have to have the same mentality.”

Caion who has 18 goals from 23 matches in all competitions, was happy with his performance despite some wanting him to emulate the efforts of former striker Ifedayo Olusegun, who was the Super League’s Golden Boot winner last year.

“I know everyone wants me to be the top scorer, but I am not playing for individual accolades, I am here to help the team.

“The goals will come if we play together as a unit. I hope in the next few games, we can score more goals.”
