PETALING JAYA: Tan Cheng Hoe and Brendan Gan have always shared a good rapport, especially during their days with the Harimau Malaya.

One could not forget Brendan’s performance under coach Cheng Hoe in the World Cup 2022-Asian Cup 2023 second-round qualifiers against Thailand in 2019, where he scored one and provided the assist in Malaysia’s 2-1 win.

Both are now reunited in Selangor and the 34-year-old has shown that he can still be an integral part of Cheng Hoe’s revolution after his stirring performance in the Red Giants’ 5-0 win over Melaka on Saturday.

The inspirational midfielder scored twice and was adjudged man of the match in his first game under Cheng Hoe.

What struck many people was the fact that Selangor were able to follow Cheng Hoe’s style of play after just four days of training.

But Brendan said some things need to be fixed in order for the team to be totally in tune with the new style, which emphasises on possession football.

“I think it’s funny when a new coach comes in, everyone is always trying to show what they can give to the coach and the team,” he joked.

“But I think the best part about it is that we have taken on board what he wants.

“Throughout this week, we have been practising the style of play he wants and the commitment he expects from us. The boys showed that against Melaka.

“We came out and controlled the game.

“But we have a lot to improve on. It was not our best performance but it’s one that we can take positives from.”

Brendan said they have to further refine their gameplay before their match against Petaling Jaya City on Friday.

“Keeping the ball moving is part of his style and it will take a bit more time for some players to adapt.

“There are movements we have to crisp up. The result against Melaka was a boost.

“We played well in some games but didn’t get the desired results.

“We hope to finish the league strong.”

Selangor are currently eighth with 23 points from 19 games while PJ City are a rung below them on 20 points.
