Filipino fillip for JDT – De Murga and Maranon add to myriad of options

PETALING JAYA: Philippines internationals – centreback Carli De Murga and striker Bienvenido Maranon – will bolster JDT’s foreign options for the new Malaysian League season.

The Southern Tigers confirmed the signings of the two in a video that was posted on the club’s official social media pages.

It is not known whether the two will play for the Super League side or the feeder club in Premier League, but one thing is for certain – JDT will have lots of import options to choose from.

They will also be available for the AFC Champions League selection.

Maranon, 35, who is a Spaniard but acquired Philippines citizenship in 2020, comes with a stellar goal-scoring reputation for his former club United City.

He was the top scorer in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the AFC Cup, with a combined total of 15 goals – 10 in 2019 and five in 2020.

He is also the all-time top scorer of the tournament with 35 goals.

In the recent AFF Suzuki Cup, he finished joint top scorer with Malaysia’s Safawi Rasid, Thailand’s Teerasil Dangda and Chanathip Songkrasin, scoring four goals.

Besides Maranon, JDT also boasts Brazilian Bergson Da Silva and Argentine Fernando Forestieri in their strike force.

De Murga, 33, has won 46 caps with the Philippines. Born in Spain, he was eligible to play for the Philippines thanks to his mother, who is of Filipino descent.

Last year, he played for Terengganu and captained them to a fourth-place finish in the Super League and semi-finals in the Malaysia Cup.

Besides that, he had also played for top South-East Asian clubs like Chonburi from Thailand and Ceres-Negros in the Philippines.
