KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak United head coach E. Elavarasan is confident his side can challenge for the Premier League title this season.

His confidence stems from the fact that they have several experienced Malaysian League players such as Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Sandro da Silva, Taylor Regan and D. Christie Jayaseelan.

And with former national coach B. Satiananthan as the technical director, the team from the Land of the Hornbills look serious to get back into the Super League next season.

Elavarasan, however, did not want his squad to be overconfident and underestimate the other teams, as there was still a lot of work to be done in terms of tactics and on-field chemistry.

Sarawak United are set to kick off their Premier League campaign against Kelantan United at Selayang Municipal Council Stadium on March 6.

“I hope the players are able to be fully prepared before the season starts and based on the experience of most of the new players we have this time, I think we can do it (win the league), ” he said in a statement.

Elavarasan also expressed confidence in striker Norshahrul, or better known as Mat Yo, as being the club’s main goalscorer this season.

He said the former BG Pathum United (Thailand) player had the ability to rekindle his best form, and could be an important asset to the team.

“All players need to help him, while we hope that he will regain his confidence. If everything is positive, I think there is no problem for him to make an impact, ” he said.

Among other new players to don the Sarawak United jersey are South Korean winger Lee Chang-hoon, striker Tommy Mawat Bada, defenders Amer Saidin, K. Reuben, and Khair Jones, as well as midfielder Gopi Rizqi. — Bernama
