Sabah settle for Sarawak’s Lucas as coach for new season

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Football Club (Sabah FC) announced Sarawakian Lucas Kalang Laeng as their new head coach, charged with leading the squad’s 2021 Malaysian League campaign.Sabah FC chief executive officer Datuk Verdon Bahanda said the club considered several candidates to fill the vacant position of head coach of the Tambadau squad and Lucas was selected based on his ability and experience.

The post was vacant with the departure of head coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto, who did not have the Pro A licence.

“Lucas has a Pro A coaching licence and has expertise in sport science, ” he said in a statement yesterday.

Verdon said Sabah FC thanked Kurniawan and former fitness coach Sofie Imam Faizal and wished them the best in their future endeavours after their contracts were not renewed for next season.

Lucas was Sarawak coach last season (2019) and was among the nine coaches from Malaysian League teams to participate in the fourth module of the 2019-2020 Asian Football Confederation Professional Coaching Diploma course that was held from Oct 1 to Oct 14 last year.

Meanwhile, Super League teams Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Selangor have managed to sign 12 out of over 40 second-generation Mokhtar Dahari Academy (AMD) graduates.

According to a trusted source, contracts of between two and three years were offered to all 12 of the 17-year-old trainees who frequently featured in the academy’s main squad.

One of the squad’s best midfielders Ziad El Basheer signed with JDT while defender Mohd Faiz Amer Runnizar chose the Red Giants squad.

Striker Muhammad Najmudin Akmal Kamal Akmal, who formed a strike partnership with national star Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin during the 2018 Under-16 (U-16) Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship, will follow Ziad to JDT. — Bernama.
