Football: Safawi heads to Portugal as JDT seal 7th Super League title

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Super League match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Sabah on Friday (Oct 2) was the last outing for national footballer Safawi Rasid for the Johor club as it sealed its seventh league title.

He will now embark on his European adventure in Portugal.

In a statement posted on the Southern Tigers Facebook page, JDT wished Safawi all the best as he joins Portuguese Primeira Liga side Portimonense SC.

The Terengganu-born has been an excellent servant to the club since his debut on Jan 27,2017.

He made 101 appearances for JDT, scoring 47 goals and making 18 assists in his four seasons there.

Safawi has won four Malaysia Super League titles, two Malaysia Cups and three Charity cups with the Southern Tigers.

In his last appearance for JDT, Safawi scored two goals in the 56th and 80th minute.

The two goals, along with strikes from Diogo Santo (38th) and Leandro Velasquez (84th) were enough to beat Sabah 4-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.

The win helped JDT defend their league title for the seventh time in a row.
