PETALING JAYA: When it comes to giving up RM30,000 or three points, Petaling Jaya (PJ) City skipper K. Gurusamy (pic) will gladly fork out the money and keep the points.

The Pheonix were slapped with a RM30,000 fine by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) on Thursday for failing to provide a venue for their Super League clash against Terengganu on March 14. And Guru is glad the team have averted a major disaster.

Terengganu had been hoping the three points from the match would be awarded to them but the MFL board opted to just hand PJ City a fine.

A three-point docking would have been a massive blow for PJ City as the Super League side will see only seven matches before the season is wrapped up. PJ City, however, will have eight matches to play as the Terengganu tie had been called off.

Former international Gurusamy said dropping points could have been disastrous to their target of a top-four finish although they are currently placed 10th in the 12-team standings with four points from three matches.

“There are not many matches to play so it’s harder to catch up if you drop points and you might be in the relegation zone in a blink of an eye, ” said the midfielder.

“So, to hear that we were not docked points is good news... we now have a game in hand and we need to get points from it to move up the standings... We have a good team now and we are all eager to help the team to do well this season.”

Gurusamy and his teammates will resume their Super League campaign against Terengganu on Aug 22, followed by Selangor (Aug 27), Kedah (Sept 2), Sabah (Sept 6), Melaka (Sept 10), Johor Darul Ta’zim (Sept 13), UiTM (Sept 18) and Police (Sept 22).

“Every match will be tough because everyone wants to escape relegation... on top of that, we will be playing matches every four days. It will really be a test of the players’ fitness, ” said Gurusamy.

“We will focus on training to be ready for the matches. We have a short time but we will have to use it well. Fitness will be the key to be on the top for these games.”
