PETALING JAYA: World youth tournaments every year and more places for members in the nine standing committees – those are among the suggestions by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to world governing body FIFA.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino held a virtual meeting with FIFA member associations from the Asean zone on Wednesday and (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin (pic) had expressed his desire for youth meets to be held more often instead of biennially,
“As FIFA have 211 member countries, I suggested that FIFA open the door to more member associations to be appointed to the nine standing committees of FIFA, ” said Hamidin
“Infantino welcomed this proposal and said there will be an in-depth dialogue on this matter in the future. I also recommended various youth tournaments under the FIFA banner be held yearly instead of the current biennial system.
“This will give more opportunities for every generation of footballer to be exposed to competitive international matches via the qualifiers and the final rounds. Infantino said FIFA were always in discussions with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and it depends on the current situation, especially after October.”
The meeting also discussed the unprecedented situation caused by the Covid-19.
“Infantino also urged all the parties to work together in complying with the standard operating procedures (SOP) of football put in place by the respective countries.
“All parties need to be wary and attentive with each country facing different challenges in curbing Covid-19.
“The football industry around the world is facing the impact of Covid-19, so FIFA’s 211 countries need to ensure that there is no new chain from football.”
Representatives of each of the 11 Asean countries shared information on their current Covid-19 status with Hamidin telling Infantino that the Malaysian League was scheduled to resume on Aug 26.
Hamidin is also scheduled to take part in the 70th FIFA Congress, also to be held virtually, on Sept 18.
