PETALING JAYA: After a great 2018 when they won the Malaysia Cup, it was all downhill in 2019 for Perak.

The Seladang finished fifth in the Super League, ended up as runners-up in the FA Cup and could only reach the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup in 2019.

Now, they are hoping for a rebound in 2020.

They had a slow transfer window but managed to sign Brazilian striker Guilherme De Paula, Australian centreback Anthony Golec, Cambodian midfielder Thierry Chantha Bin and winger Hafiz Ramdan.

They also opted to retain Brazilian midfielders Leandro Dos Santos and Careca from last season after losing the services of midfield dynamo Brendan Gan to Selangor.

Despite having no big-name signings, coach Mehmet Durakovic believes his squad can finish in the top three this season.

The Australian said the 2020 season will be tough and has challenged his men to upset heavyweights Johor Darul Ta’zim, Kedah, Selangor, and Tereng-ganu.

“We lost several key players this season but with the combination of the young and experienced players we have, I can say we will try finish in the top three, ” said Durakovic who is into his fourth season with the silver state.

Although Perak had a slow pre-season, they did well to beat FA Cup winners Kedah 3-1 in their friendly – the second edition of the Unity Shield game – at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Feb 15.

Durakovic’s men had kicked off their pre-season with a 0-2 loss to Premier League side Penang (Jan 28) but bounced back in their Tour of Singapore with a 1-1 draw against Balestier Khalsa (Feb 6) and a 4-0 win over Geylang International (Feb 9).

The Seladang will begin their Super League campaign against Terengganu at the Sultan Mizan Stadium on on Saturday.
