PETALING JAYA: Premier League champions Sabah are not impressed with on-trial midfielder Joseph Marrero of Puerto Rico.
Coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto tested the 26-year-old in friendly matches against Kaya FC 2-0 (Jan 21) and Stallion Laguna 2-1 (Jan 23) in Binan, the Philippines, and is now looking for other options in the transfer market.
The Rhinos also tested two new signings – striker Hector Ramos from Puerto Rico and Thai-German winger Dennis Buschening – in the tour in the Philippines.
Sabah’s goals in the tour were scored by Arius Dius Jais, Azizzan Nordin, Alto Linus and South Korean defender Park Tae-soo who was retained from last season with Serbian forward Rodoljub Paunovic.
Team manager Henry Saimpon said the team performed better in the second match than they did against Kaya and the new imports are showing promising signs.
“Ramos still need to adjust to the coach’s playing philosophy while the candidate for the fifth import slot Marrero may not be signed because he’s not the type of midfielder we need, ” said Henry who is also Sabah Football Association (FAS) vice-president.
“The strikers may have not scored goals but the other players have stepped up to score. This is a good sign for us... we want the players to take their chances and score.
The Rhinos will open their campaign against Police on March 1
