PETALING JAYA: It will be a wrap for Melaka when one more foreign player is signed up next week.
Coach Zainal Abidin Hassan can then start work on building his team’s fitness and cohesiveness before the start of the Super League on Feb 29.
Colombian midfielder Romel Morales, Nigerian striker Uche Agba and South Korean centreback Jan Suk-won have already been confirmed as import players in the team but Zainal said a few players would be arriving in Melaka to try out for the one last available place.
However, none of them will be from the South-East Asian region.
“We will stick to four imports. We have a few more foreign players flying in for trials, and we look to finalise the last import by next week, ” said Zainal.
“As for the confirmed foreigners, they have more than a month to combine with the current players. They have shown calibre in the league, but it is time they fit into our team.
“We have now entered into the fifth week of the pre-season, and we are still focusing on building fitness. I can see improvements, although they are not up to mark yet.”
The Mousedeer will enter into match mode next week with some friendlies lined up in the country before they head off to a South-East Asian nation for some games.
“If everything goes right, we could be playing three matches in Indonesia. The clubs have not been confirmed yet. “
For the 2020 Super League season, Melaka have signed wingers Ahmad Syamim Yahya and Nurridzuan Abu Hassan, defenders Aizulridzwan Razali, Annas Rahmat, Khair Jones, midfielder Ferris Danial Mat Nasir and Khairul Anwar Shahrudin and goalkeeper Norazlan Razali.
The team have retained Safiq Rahim, Razman Roslan, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, Deevan Raj and Faris Shah Rosli.
Last season, Melaka finished sixth with 33 points and were booted out of the second round in the FA Cup and quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup.
