Finding the old Apek – again

A big help: Khairul Fahmi Che Mat (left) with one of the men behind his recovery, Yap Chan Kor.

THE 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup will always be a highlight in Khairul Fahmi Che Mat’s career. When he first came along, many wondered if the diminutive goalkeeper could be an asset for Malaysia, but the 1.70m goalkeeper was instrumental in Malaysia’s first AFF tournament victory. Since then, he has amassed 56 caps for the country and won several domestic titles with Kelantan.

However, in the last two years, the 30-year-old fondly known as Apek has been plagued with injuries and was even told to leave his boyhood club in 2018. Now with Melaka United, he is looking to reinvigorate his club and national team career and has gone to great lengths to stay injury-free.
