Terengganu defeat KL 1-0 at Malaysian Super League

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu finally got their first win of the season after four matches.

The Turtles beat Kuala Lumpur 1-0 at the Cheras Football Stadium on Friday (Feb 22) in the Malaysian Super League.

The match was delayed for 45 minutes due to a floodlight issue, but after kickoff, both sides were eager to get the first goal.

The first 10 minutes of the match proved to be an end-to-end affair as both sides exchanged chances.

Sanjaar Shaakhmedov proved to be the toast in that period as he had two chances in the 4th and 8th minute and was the  orchestrator in attack for the Turtles.

In the 6th minute, Zhafri Yahya should have scored the first goal for the City Boys when he received a brilliant through ball from Ryutaro Karube but the winger hit his shot into the side netting.

In the 16th minute, Shaakhmedov proved to be handful for Kuala Lumpur’s midfielders as he was able to get opportunities from outside the box but Sharbinee Allawee was able to smother his attempts.

Abdul Malik Mat Ariff should have scored Terengganu’s first goal in the 29th minute when he received a peach of a pass from Shaakhmedov but the winger squandered the chance by shooting it straight at Sharbinee.

Come second half, Terengganu were on the charge.

In the 48th minute, a brilliant interchange of passes between Tchetche and Shaakhmedov found Ahmad Syamim Yahya but the winger put his shot wide.

In the 61t minute, Paulo Josue thought he had the first goal but his acrobatic attempt inside the box was ruled out as offside by referee Mohd Amirul Izwan Yaacob.

Terengganu finally got the first goal in the 68th minute when Lee Tuck’s corner was pounced by centreback Igor Zonjic.

The scoreline remained 1-0 as Terengganu head back to Kuala Terengganu with three points.

Meanwhile at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, Kedah continue their stellar performance in the league by beating Petaling Jaya City 2-0 to extend their lead on top.

Kedah’s goals were scored by Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim (7th minute) and Fernando Rodriguez (41st minute).
