GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang football captain Aziz Azizan (pic), who has been comatose since Monday, passed away at the Penang Hospital at 4.30pm yesterday.

Football Association of Penang (FAP) press liaison officer Ahmad Zachki Ahmad Suri said Aziz’s wife, his nephew Zambri Ahmad, a former footballer, and other close family members were beside him during his death.

The 54-year-old former left winger fell ill during a friendly veterans football match in Balik Pulau and was taken by ambulance to the district hospital on Sunday.

He slipped into a coma on Monday due to high blood pressure and was transferred to the Penang Hospital where he was on life support.

Ahmad Zachki said Aziz’s body would be taken to his hometown of Bagan Lebai Tahir in Teluk Air Tawar.

“The family has not notified us on any funeral arrangements yet.”

Former footballers Jelani Wila_stra, Ahmad Yusof, Kamal Khalid, Fauzi Ibrahim, Zahidi Shoib and Nordin Kamis had visited Aziz and his family at the Penang Hospital when he was in a coma.
