JOHOR BARU: Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has resigned as the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president with immediate affect.
In a statement posted on the FAM Facebook page on Thursday, Tunku Ismail said the national team's ranking has dropped three places from 175 to 178 and to him, it was a very big failure.
“With that being said, I think it is time that the president of FAM leaves football," said Tunku Ismail.
“Thank you for everything and it has been an honour for me to serve Malaysian football. Good luck.
“To my loved Bangsa Johor and all the fans of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) around the world, my wife and kids... Daddy's home!” he added.
The statement titled "History Made, It Is Time" was posted earlier on the Johor Southern Tigers' Facebook page.
Tunku Ismail, who is also the JDT football club owner, said he had done his best to lift the sport’s profile.
“Ever since I took up the post of FAM president, I have restructured local football, lured in sponsors to help contribute to football in the country and prepared a long-term plan for the local football with the cooperation of LaLiga,” he said.
