BARCELONA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Production company Mediapro is to open up an auction for the broadcasting rights to the Champions and Europa League in Spain. After narrowly seeing off telecommunications giants Telefonica last year for the rights to the next three seasons of UEFA club competition, Mediapro, through its joint venture with Al Jazeera Bein Sports, is looking to make a profit on its investment.
“We’ll ask for offers to be sent to us at the beginning of March,” Mediapro President Jaume Roures told Reuters. “Then at the start of April, we’ll see where the genuine interest is.” Online streaming giants Netflix and Amazon could also become involved in the bidding, although there are doubts on a technical level as to whether they could stream matches live to millions of customers. If they were able to do so it would be a landmark moment in the market.Telefonica said last week it would be willing to partner with Netflix and Amazon should they wish to bid for the TV rights to La Liga.
