PETALING JAYA: The national Under-23 football team’s final tune-up match for the AFC Under-23 championship in Changshu, China, has been snowed out.
The Malaysian side were scheduled to play Syria’s Under-23 side at the Jiangsu Training Centre Stadium in Nanjing yesterday but the match was called off due to thick snow covering the pitch. The match will be played today.
The Syrian squad, based in Kunshan, couldn’t travel to Nanjing for the match as the roads are also closed due to heavy snow.
The AFC Under-23 championship starts from Jan 9-27. Malaysia, making their maiden appearance at the championship, play 2016 semi-finalists Iraq in their Group C opener on Jan 10 before taking on Jordan (Jan 13) and Saudi Arabia (Jan 16).
“The postponement is frustrating for us and the Syrian team as we both share the same objective – to test the strengths of our squads ahead of the AFC Under-23 tournament,” he said.
“We’ll try to play the match tomorrow but weather conditions are beyond our control. If the game can’t be played, we’ll just have to head straight into the competition.”
