PETALING JAYA: The 30th edition of the Tun Sharifah Rodziah Trophy will be the final avenue to select players for the national women’s squad for the KL SEA Games in August.
Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) women's football committee chairman Brig Gen Datuk Norhuda Ahmad said that so far 25 players have been identified and undergoing training in Sabah.
“We had identified some players during the Women's Football Community League ... so, the Tun Sharifah Rodziah Trophy will be the final platform for players to showcase their talent and impress the selectors.
“We won bronze at the 1995 SEA Games hosted by Thailand in Chiangmai. Our target is to be among the medal winners and lift the status of women’s football,” she said at the draw for the Tun Sharifah Rodziah Trophy at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
Malaysia could only manage fourth in two other SEA Games – Vietnam 2003 and Myanmar 2013.
In yesterday’s draw, defending champions MISC-MIFA found themselves in Group A with Selangor, Police and Perak.
Runners-up Sabah head Group B with Kedah, Penang and Malacca while Group C comprises Sarawak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan.
According to Norhuda, newcomers Malacca and Kelantan replaced Armed Forces and Kuala Lumpur.
The 30th edition will be held in Miri, Sarawak, from April 6-15. The champions will get RM20,000, runners-up RM10,000 and third placing RM5,000. — Bernama
