PETALING JAYA: Three-time Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) have pulled off a shocker - barely two days before the start of the 2017 M-League season.
Head coach Mario Gomez (pic), in a surprise move, has parted ways with the club after successfully guiding the Southern Tigers to win the Charity Shield (2016), FA Cup (2016), two Super League titles (2015, 2016) and the AFC Cup (2015).
The news of the Argentine coach’s departure was posted on the JDT website on Wednesday.
Club president Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim expressed JDT's greatest appreciation to Gomez for the valuable services rendered during his stay.
“This decision was derived for the betterment of the club as the philosophy and the direction of the club is paramount to anything else. Nonetheless, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my greatest appreciation and say thank you to the legendary coach for his tremendous contribution to the club during his tenure,” she said.
JDT will open their Super League campaign against Kedah in the Charity Shield match at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Baru on Friday.
