PETALING JAYA: Malacca will be looking to claim another Super League side’s scalp when they host Felda United in a Malaysia Cup Group D match at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca on Friday.
The Premier League leaders started their Malaysia Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Terengganu on July 12, but lost 3-2 to fellow Premier League side Negri Sembilan on July 19.
Malacca coach Mat Zan Mat Aris said that although Felda are the one of the heavyweights in the Super League, he’s looking forward to keeping his side’s eight-match unbeaten record at home intact.
“Felda are second in the Super League ... that shows their quality and experience. They will be tough opponents,” said the former international on Thursday.
“But we are at home and we don’t want to lose in front of our fans ... it will be interesting to see if our game plan works.”
All four teams in Group D have three points each after two matches and are only separated by goal difference. Felda top the group, followed by Malacca, Terengganu and Negri.
Malacca have been going great guns in the 12-team Premier League and are leading the race to be promoted to the Super League with 36 points after 15 matches.
But Mat Zan is more concerned about his team having to navigate their way through a congested fixture list, which sees them playing five matches in 15 days.
“We have same problem as the Super League teams. It’s hard to play at same tempo,” said Mat Zan.
“We are playing well, thanks to the players’ fighting spirit. We have a squad of young and hungry players. We will be going up against strong teams in the Malaysia Cup and I hope my players can maintain their good showing and keep on fighting.”
