Estudiantes to stamp their mark in Frenz Under-18 tournament

KELANA JAYA: Argentina’s Estudiantes will be out to make an impression in the Frenz International Cup Under-18 football tournament.

The third edition of the competition will kick off simultaneously in Palembang, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Led by team manager Aiello Juan Martin, the Estudiantes team arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday after a 30-hour flight.

The Argentinians are drawn with Frenz United Malaysia, English side Tottenham Hotspur and the Indian Under-18 side in Group D.

“We are making our debut and we believe we have the same chance as the other 15 teams to win the tounament,” said Martin at the tournament’s launch at a mall here.

“My players are all very excited. I believe we will have a wonderful campaign here as we are well prepared,” he added.

Frenz United Indonesia are in Group A with England’s Liverpool, Guangzhou Evergrande of China and Holland’s Feyenoord FC.

Brazil’s Internacional, the other South American side, are in Group B with Thailand’s Chonburi FC, Japan’s Kashima Antlers and Valencia of Spain.

Vietnam’s PVF, Turkey’s Besiktas, Gamba Osaka of Japan and Portugal’s Porto are in Group C.

The Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium and Madya Bumi Sriwijaya Stadium in Palembang will stage the Group A and B matches.

Malaysia will host the Groups C and D matches at the Shah Alam Stadium, UiTM Sports Complex and Maybank Sports Complex.

Both the semi-final matches will be held in Palembang on Jan 12. The final is on Jan 14, also in Palembang.
