PETALING JAYA: Premier League champions Police are the first team to have qualified for the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals after defeating T-Team 2-1 in a Group D match at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
The cops have the maximum 12 points for an unassailable lead at the top of the standings, with two more matches to play.
On Wednesday night, Maldives striker Ali Ashfaq opened the scoring for Police from the penalty spot in the 19th minute before the Titans fought back to level the score through Rwanda striker Jimmy Mulisa’s neat header in the 52nd minute.
Ali then sealed victory for the cops with a brilliant solo in the 85th minute.
Police have now put all the three Super League sides in the group to shame, having earlier defeated Sime Darby FC (3-0), Selangor (2-0) and T-Team (4-1).
Selangor’s quarter-final hopes are in jeopardy after a losing 2-1 to Sime Darby FC at the Shah Alam Stadium.
Ahmad Hazwan Bakri opened score for the Red Giants in the 62nd minute but Sime Darby bounced back with goals from Fahrulrazi Kamaruddin and Mateo Roskam in the 76th and 83rd minutes respectively.
Selangor stay with six points while T-Team and Sime Darby FC are tied with three points each.
Kedah are back in contention for a place in the quarter-finals after edging nine-man Sarawak 2-1 in a Group B match at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar.
S. Chanturu put the Crocks ahead in the 20th minute but Kedah hit back with goals from Billy Mehmet (53rd) and Syazwan Tajuddin (90th).
Sarawak’s Junior Eldstal (40th) and Gabor Gyepes (81st) were sent off while Kedah’s Shafizan Hashim was red-carded in the 40th minute.
In Ipoh, Perak and Terengganu drew 1-1 in another Group B match.
