RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - England's failure to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup is a bitter pill to swallow but a young batch of talent in the squad will make for a brighter future, manager Roy Hodgson said on Saturday.

England lost their opening two games to Italy and Uruguay and their faint hopes of avoiding elimination at the group stage for the first time since 1958 ended when Costa Rica beat Italy on Friday in Group D.
