PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) are bracing for one of their hottest elections.

The 50th Congress meets on Sunday at the Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie to elect a new group of office bearers for the 2014-2018 term.

A total of 45 candidates will contest for the various positions, including a three-cornered fight for the president’s post.

The incumbent president Sultan Ahmad Shah, who has been at the helm for 30 years (1984-2014) will be challenged for the first time.

Taking him on are his son and incumbent deputy president Tengku Makhota Pahang Tengku Abdullah and Johor FA president Tengku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Speculation is rife that the 83-year-old Pahang Ruler is set to step down, setting the stage for a battle royal between the two crown princes.

For the deputy presidency, the three-cornered fight is between vice-presidents Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah, and Selangor FA deputy president Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad.

A total of eight candidates will contest for the four vice-presidents’ posts.

They are Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, Datuk Sudarsono Osman, Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman, Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz, Tan Sri Zulkifli Mohd Zin, Datuk Rosmadi Ismail, Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin and Datuk Wan Ahmad Nizam Hamid.

A record 22 candidates will fight for the eight exco seats. There are also nine candidates for the two women’s exco positions.

The votes of 39 delegates will decide the outcome of the elections. A total of 14 state FAs will cast two votes each (28 votes), together with Armed Forces (two), Police (two), Malaysian Malays (two), Malaysian Chinese FA (two), Malaysian Indian Sports Council (two) and Malaysian Coaches Association (one).
