JOHOR BARU: Defender Baihakki Khaizan is confident of a change of fortunes in Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) campaign in the Super League.
The star-studded JDT were the pre-season favourites but suffered an early setback, and are now languishing third from bottom in the 12-team standings with four points from four matches.
“We have a strong team but I can’t believe my eyes when I look at the table standings,” said the Singaporean.
JDT have managed only one win, beating Perak (2-0) at home on Jan 18. Since then, they lost to T-Team (1-0) away, drew with Lions XII (2-2) at home, and last week lost to Pahang (3-2) in Kuantan.
Baihakki said Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Kedah in the FA Cup quarter-final first-leg match in Larkin had given them a fresh breath of life.
“The win over Kedah is good motivation for us. We are beginning to click well as a team and there is better teamwork and understanding with one another. It is not easy to play in a big team like JDT. The expectations are quite high.
“The game against league leaders Selangor this Saturday will be very important to us and we want to win the match badly,” he said.
On Tuesday, JDT played without their star player Pablo Aimar. The match, which was marred by three sending-offs, saw JDT getting their goals through Mohd Amri Yahyah, Hariss Harun and Luciano Figueroa, while Kedah’s Billy Mehmet scored the solitary goal for the visitors.
The second leg of the FA Cup quarter-final match will be played at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Setar on Feb 18.
