Kim Swee’s Harimau Muda to play in Merdeka Tournament

PETALING JAYA: The Harimau Muda A squad preparing for the Myanmar SEA Games will represent Malaysia in the invitational Merdeka Tournament to be held in Kuantan from Sept 5-15.

National Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee expects to have his full team for the first time.

“I hope to assemble my full team and it will be a sneak preview of the SEA Games squad,” Kim Swee said from Kazan, Russia, yesterday.

The Harimau Muda A squad are currently featuring in the World University Games football competition in Kazan.

They defeated Italy 2-0 in the opening Group C game and lost to Great Britain 2-0 in the second. The other team in the group Algeria withdrew at the last-minute.

In yesterday’s match, Italy downed Great Britain 1-0. All three teams finished tied on three points. Great Britain and Malaysia reached the quarter-finals on better goal difference.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) are organising the Merdeka Tournament after a five-year hiatus. The teams confirmed are hosts Malaysia, Jordan and Singapore. Indonesia and Thailand have verbally agreed to take part.
