QPR’s Samba heads back to Anzhi

LONDON: Queens Park Rangers defender Christopher Samba is heading back to Russian Premier League outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, reports in Britain said on Tuesday.

The Sun newspaper and the Sky Sports News channel said the 29-year-old Congo international had signed for the Dagestan club for £12mil (US$18mil).

French-born Samba rejoined QPR in January 2013 after a spell at big-spending Anzhi, who last season finished third in the Russian top flight and were beaten finalists in the Russian Cup.

QPR were relegated from the English Premier League last season and manager Harry Redknapp is looking to reduce the club’s wage bill as they prepare for life in the second-tier English Championship.

Last week, the west London side announced that striker Djibril Cisse had left by mutual consent, following in the footsteps of fellow forward Jay Boothroyd.

The Sun said French striker Loic Remy, on-loan midfielder Joey Barton and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar were also likely to be on their way. - AFP
