PETALING JAYA: National diver Mohd Syafiq Puteh is determined to win a medal with Wendy Ng Yan Yee in the Commonwealth Games from July 28-Aug 8 in Birmingham.

Fresh from winning his first 3m springboard individual gold medal in the Hanoi SEA Games, Syafiq is now turning his attention to the Commonwealth Games.

He and Wendy will pair up for the 3m springboard mixed synchro event, which will be contested for the first time in the Commonwealth Games.

“I want to fight for a podium finish in the 3m springboard mixed synchro with Wendy. It will not be easy as we will face strong divers from Britain, Australia and Canada. But we will give our all to achieve our target,” said Syafiq.

Despite the tough challenge, the 26-year-old and Wendy can take heart from their achievement of winning gold together in the event in the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur in 2019.

Besides the 3m mixed synchro, Syafiq will also be taking part in the 1m and 3m springboard individual events.

The Ipoh-born diver is currently in great form as he upstaged seniors Chew Yiwei and Ooi Tze Liang to win the 3m individual title in the National Age-Group Championships in his hometown.

Yiwei and Tze Liang will join Syafiq in the 3m individual event in the Commonwealth Games while Gabriel Gilbert Daim will join him in the 1m individual.

In the last edition in 2018, Syafiq only took part in the 1m individual and was placed fifth.

The Ipoh-born diver is currently preparing for another assignment before the Commonwealth Games - the World Aquatics Championships in Hungary from June 26-July 3.

Syafiq will be participating for the first time in the 3m springboard individual and mixed synchro in the world meet.

“Before this, I have only taken part in the 1m springboard individual event in the World Championships. I hope to reach the final in both events this time,” said Syafiq.
