KUALA LUMPUR: China have arrived for the Asian Diving Cup without their male springboard divers.

And that is good news for Chew Yiwei (pic) and Ooi Tze Liang as they look forward to helping Malaysia secure an Olympic quota slot in the men’s individual 3m springboard this weekend.

In the absence of the Chinese divers, Indonesia Asian Games bronze medallist Yiwei and the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Tze Liang will be looking to finish ahead of the Japanese divers Sho Sakai and Ken Terauchi.

The Japanese duo beat Yiwei-Tze Liang to the bronze medal in the men’s 3m springboard synchro final at the Asian Games in Jakarta last year.

The diving team are already pinning their hopes on Nur Dhabitah Sabri to be on top of her game to win the women’s individual 3m springboard event on Sunday to join Wendy Ng Yan Yee on board to Tokyo.

Wendy also qualified for the Olympics earlier as one of the 12 finalists in the event at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, in July.

China are also not fielding their women springboard divers for the Asian diving meet.

Only the respective individual winners of the men’s and women’s 3m springboard and 10m platform will qualify for Tokyo.

China already earned the maximum slot of two entries each for the Tokyo Olympics through the world meet.

For Yiwei, the Asian diving meet is an important tournament and he hopes to be in peak form.

“Either Tze Liang or the two Japanese divers will be my main competitors,” said Yiwei.

“I will use the same set of dives that I used to win my first individual Asian Games medal last year. I am already familiar with these dive routines and it’s not the time to risk things as I want to finish strongly.

“This is my chance to perform. I have yet to qualify for the Olympics as I missed the boat the last time in Rio de Janeiro, so it has been a long wait since then,” said the 23-year-old from Selangor.

Pandelela Rinong is also not diving in the women’s individual 10m platform today having already qualified for the Olympic through the world meet but she will pair up with Leong Mun Yee in the women’s 10m platform synchro event.
