PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s men divers ended their campaign at the World Aquatics Championship without winning a single ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Jellson Jabillin wrapped up Malaysia’s outing yesterday by missing the mark in the men’s 10m platform preliminary round in Gwangju, South Korea.
A top-18 finish would have guaranteed Jellson a spot in the semi-finals, which would have been considered a huge achievement for the 17-year-old, but he flopped with 327.40 points to finish 30th.
For individual events, only the top-12 who make it into the final at the world meet earn tickets to Tokyo.
The other men divers who failed to earn tickets are the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ooi Tze Liang, Muhd Syafiq Puteh and Hanis Nazirul Jaya Surya.
While the men failed to earn a single ticket, the women’s team booked spots to three events at the Olympics.
Pandelela Rinong-Leong Mun Yee stepped up first when they earned a slot for the country by winning the silver medal in the 10m platform synchro.
Pandelela then earned herself a personal spot to Tokyo when she finished a creditable fifth in the10m platform individual final, followed by Wendy Ng Yan Yee, who made it to the 3m springboard 12-women final.
