PETALING JAYA: Diver Ooi Tze Liang and his 3m springboard synchro partner Ahmad Amsyar Azman are aiming for a top-six finish in Shanghai and hopefully secure their third consecutive FINA Diving World Series outing next year.
The pair have just completed their second full season in Monterrey, Mexico last week, finishing eighth overall in the six-leg series on 60 points.
As there are no Olympics or World Championships year, the World Cup in Shanghai next month (July 15-20) will serve as the qualifying platform.
“We’re hungry for more world class actions and we want to continue being part of the World Series next season,” said Tze Liang, who was the star performer for Malaysia at last December’s Myanmar SEA Games, with three gold medals.
“We’ve gained a lot of experience by competing in the series in the last two years. When you are up against the world’s best, you know you have got to raise your performance.
“So next month’s World Cup will not just be a warm-up tournament before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, we need to be at our very best as a spot for next year’s world series is at stake.”
In Shanghai, the Malaysians will also be out to retain their three representations in the 10m platform individual (Pandelela Rinong) and synchro (Pandelela-Leong Mun Yee) as well as 3m springboard synchro (Cheong Jun Hoong-Wendy Ng).
