Tze Liang-Amsyar take synchro 3m springboard gold (updated)

It was the second gold in Naypyitaw for Tze Liang, who claimed his first after winning the individual 3m springboard competition on Thursday.

But it would not have been possible if Amsyar had not done his part. The duo continued to show there is a future for Malaysia in the men’s springboard synchro discipline after the retirement of seniors Bryan Nickson Lomas, Huang Qiang and Yeoh Ken Nee.

Amsyar-Tze Liang were outstanding in finishing sixth in the event at the World Championships and already qualified on merit for the prestigious Diving World Series next year, which is only for the top eight world-ranked pairings.

Thursday was just a confirmation of their emergence as a pair that can be depended on in the near future and Amsyar will savour his first golden moment in three SEA Games appearances.

He was once warned for shirking training a few years back but that is all in the past as he has now done Perlis proud.

“This is my first gold as I previously took bronze in the individual 3m springboard in Palembang two years ago.

“We did not do any new dive routines here and used the same DD (degree of difficulties) from the World Championships a few months back.

“This is not our best performance, but it was good enough to win the gold here.

“We have to raise our DD further if we want to improve and be competitive at a higher level.

“Our aim next year is to do well in the Diving World Series and fight for a medal,” said 21-year-old Amsyar, who has been diving since 12.
