BANGKOK: Six months ago, cyclist Lau New Joe could not even walk properly after an appendicitis surgery.

On Thursday, he was smiling on the SEA Games podium after a remarkable debut, with the men’s cycling pursuit team delivering the contingent’s 200th medal - a gold.
