PETALING JAYA: The Asian Road Championships to be held in Malaysia this year may not take place at all.
The Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) are mulling over cancelling the Asian meet due to the Covid-19 situation.
The continental championships was initially scheduled from March 17-21 but was postponed to a later date and planned for end of June to early July.
But ACC executive board member Datuk Amarjit Singh said it is becoming increasingly impossible to hold a successful event this year due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases around the world and severe border restrictions around Asia. “ACC will make a final decision by mid-May after taking into account all factors including advisory from the relevant health authorities, ” said Amarjit.
“We cannot risk the health of any of the participants more so with many top road athletes are coming from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan and Taiwan as well.
“This is in line with the global effort in order to stem the spread of the virus, ” added Amarjit, who is also the vice president of Malaysian National Cycling Federation.
