Zulhelmi Zainal bags gold at Asian Track Championships

NILAI: Zulhelmi Zainal bagged a stunning gold for Malaysia in the men's junior 3km individual pursuit event at the Asian Track Championships in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.  

Zulhelmi clocked 3:24.985 to beat Kazakhstan's Maxim Gridchin, who posted 3:25.527, for the nation's first gold in the junior ranks of the Asian meet at the National Velodrome.  

Jang Hun of South Korea clocked 3:24.822 against Ryuta Sato  of Japan (3:25.283) for the bronze.  

Zulhelmi advanced to the playoff for the gold medal after he posted 3:22.702 to top the qualifying session.  

His Kazak rival earned his place by posting the second fastest time of 3:22.949.
