(Reuters) - Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow led England's recovery from a poor start as the hosts reached 171 for five before rain ended the opening day of the first test against Sri Lanka in Leeds on Thursday.

Hales and Bairstow shared an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 88 to revive the hosts, who collapsed to 83 for five after Sri Lanka seam bowler Dasun Shanaka picked up three quick wickets on his debut.
