MELBOURNE (Reuters) - A batsman of prodigious talent and a captain unflinching in pursuit of victory, Michael Clarke restored Australia to the pinnacle of test and one-day cricket but winning the affections of a nation proved his toughest battle.

Clarke bowed out a winner at The Oval on Sunday but the dead rubber demolition of England was a Pyrrhic victory that will do little to salve the 34-year-old's one burning regret.
