THE Perhentian Island Challenge, an event under the Malaysian Open Water Series, has been included in the official Beautiful Terengganu calendar of events.
“It’s great that our event has been recognised by the state tourism board. The race is getting more popular not only with Malaysians but also foreign swimmers, ” said race organiser Amrizal Ishak.
Swimmers test their endurance with a 16km race that goes around Pulau Perhentian and participants must have previously completed at least a 10km race to enter. The event also features a 4km race.
Amirizal said the popularity of open water races had been boosted by multisport events like triathlons.
“As more people compete in triathlons, they take part in open water races as part of their training, ” he said.
This year’s series opened with the 2km Port Dickson race and there will be four other races, including the Perhentian Challenge.
“Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, we are deferring one of our events scheduled for April, ” said Amirizal. — Bernama
