THE Terengganu sailing squad have successfully brought honours to Malaysia after anchoring a gold in the team optimist race of the Inter Club Team Racing and Individual Optimist Sailing Championship 2019 in Doha, Qatar.
At the competition held at Doha Marine Sports Club, the squad consisting of Asmadi Azman, Muhd Idris Mohd Zawawi, Nazmi Qusyairi Mohd Nazri, Muhd Syazwan Kamaruzaman and Fikri Aqil Mohd Fauzi topped the scoreboard with 74 points, ahead of team Turkey 1 and Thailand with 80 and 87 points, respectively.
The squad also took home the bronze medal in the individual category through Muhd Idris, who accumulated 69 points, despite having to face a slow breeze since the first day of the competition and also a strong challenge from two Thai sailors.
The gold and silver medals were won by Thailand’s Weka Bhanubandh and Nanvatron Supaamphonwit with 26 and 53 points, respectively.
The team’s coach Abdul Rani Idris, who was overwhelmed by his athletes’ success and determination, said it would boost their momentum and continue to excel at the 2020 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Johor.
“The team have shown positive performance thus far and we are confident of tidying up our operation techniques and tactics in the remaining days before Sukma.
“With good preparation, the squad would help the Terengganu contingent to retain the Games overall champions once again after 2018 Sukma in Perak, ” he said.
Abdul Rani noted that the association had drawn up a series of training and would be participating in more tournaments before finalising the list of sailors in June.
At the 2018 Sukma, the Terengganu team won silver in the team and men’s individual optimist events. — Bernama
