NUR Iman Balqis Khairik Azmi is a pint-sized pupil of SK Lavendar Heights in Seremban. She was among the over 600 primary school pupils from the state who participated in the Negri Sembilan 1st Serve Tennis Carnival at the Centre Court in Paroi last week.

The talent search was jointly organised by the Lawn Tennis Association of Negri Sembilan (LTANS), Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) and Negri Sembilan Sports Council (NSSC) with the cooperation of Negri Sembilan Education Department (JPNS) and the Education Ministry.

Among the former Negri Sembilan-born national players present at the event were Syed Mohd Agil Syed Naguib, Dr Hazwan Hizam, Aziz Shazali, V. Selvam, R. Ramachandran and O. Vasuthevan.

The eight-year-old Balqis, as she is fondly known, is in Year 2 UPM.

The shy girl said, “I am happy to be selected by my sports teacher Amirul Husni Nor Hashim, to come here today since my school has about 1,300 pupils.

“Being the smallest in my class, I can still serve the ball and learned many useful basic tennis skills.”

LTANS secretary Azam Baba said, “This talent identification programme is to expose schoolchildren to the basics of tennis.

“We have planned a follow-up event next month where we will shortlist about 40 to 50 talented players. They will be trained by 10 coaches here in the Centre Court.

“Then we will organise a mini tennis tournament where these children will play with another 50 players their age from the other states in the country.

“As hosts, we are happy we managed to get more than 650 schoolchildren which is a large base for us to work with to find talented players,” added Azam.
