BEING the youngest did not stop Penang’s junior bowler Muhammad Hariz Adlan from winning the 10th George Town Durian Masters Bowling championship.

The 16-year-old boy needed a sudden death play-off to beat teammate Ahmad Aidil in the step-ladder final at the Aspiration Centre in Sunshine Square, Bayan Baru.

He made heads turn by securing 1,824 pinfalls to come out tops in the eight-frame preliminary roll-off.

He was again in his element during the step-ladder final.

After going down to fellow Penangite Ahmad Aidil 155-208 in the first frame of the step-ladder finals, Muhammad Hariz came charging in the next frame to oust Ahmad 223-193 in the sudden death roll-off.

“It took me by surprise to be crowned as the new champion.

“This is not my first time playing in Durian Masters challenge.

“I never dreamt of winning the tournament as most of the time it is dominated by Singaporeans.

“But the moment everything began falling into place, I just grew in confidence and began doing well in my game that I went on to scorch the lanes with every pinfall,” he said after winning the tournament’s top purse of RM7,000 recently.

Muhammad Hariz said he would keep the prize money for future use.

“The money will come in handy if I am unable to secure the much-needed sponsors for future tournaments.

“As for now, I see my recent success as a very good encouragement towards my next assignment, which is the Malaysia Games to be hosted by Johor next year,” he said.
