In-form Chong and Foo off to Taiwan final

SOME top quality golf was played in the two Astro Masters qualifying rounds at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club in Kota Kemuning and Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam, where both gross champions carded under-par rounds.

Alan Chong Chek Fei, playing off a three-handicap, blitzed Kota Permai with two-under 70, while scratch player Eric Foo Hwa Peng fired a three-under-par 69 at Glenmarie.

These two seasoned campaigners made mince meat of courses that are often hyped up and for their efforts, were rewarded with slots at the grand final to be played in Taiwan in September.

Such was the form of the field that the nett champions also easily swept aside the challenges posed by the two layouts. Kota Permai nett champion Jimmy Goh Boon Hee, playing off a 10-handicap, finished with a seven-under 65, while seven-handicapper Maniam Subramaniam shot a nett six-under 66 at Glenmarie. The nett champions also qualify for the trip to Taiwan.

But that was not all. The winners of the medal competitions were also all under-par on the day.

At Kota Permai, the champions of the A, B and C Medal divisions were collectively nett 10-under, while at Glenmarie it was a case of the course surrendering 14 strokes to the medal category winners.

Chan Heng Voen (8) shot a one-under nett 71 to clinch the Kota Permai A Medal title on countback, while Loh Hung Mun (14) carded a four-under 68 for the B Medal crown and Muhammad Saleh Gani (16) seized the C Medal honours with a five-under 67.

At Glenmarie, 10-handicapper Mohamad Yusli Iskandar shot a five-under nett 67 and also won on countback. In the B Medal, the top three all signed for five-under nett 67s, after which Muhammad Haniff Abu Bakar (15) emerged with the honours on countback. Mohd Nazaruddin Hanafiah, playing off a 22 handicap, shot a four-under nett 68 to win the C Medal.
