Malaysian ice rink operators sweep top spots

ICE skating rink operators in Malaysia rejoiced over their win at Skate Malaysia 2019, featuring a record-breaking 1,100 events alongside the 2nd ISI Asia Championship series.

Sunway Pyramid Ice came in first place with 1,809 points, while Icescape Rink IOI and Myniss came in second and third, with 600 points and 599 points respectively.

Indonesian rink, Bintaro Jaya Xchange, came in fourth with 500 points, and Thailand’s Sub Zero Mega Bangna came in fifth with 445.5 points.

Supported by Malaysia Ice-Skating Federation (MISF) and the Youth and Sports Ministry, Skate Malaysia is an international figure skating event sanctioned by the Ice Skating Institute of Asia (ISI Asia) to develop winter sports within the South-East Asian region, China, UAE and its area of coverage.

Over the years, Skate Malaysia has developed into a large-scale figure skating event attended by skaters from countries and regions across Asia, and has produced significant results towards achieving the ISI Asia’s goal of developing winter sports in Asia.

This year, the event was hosted by Sunway Pyramid Ice, which has had a vast experience in hosting international events, including ice hockey competitions.

The competition was launched by Selangor youth generation development, sports and human capital development

committee chairman Mohd Khairuddin Othman.

“As a nation, we are now beginning to produce talented figure skaters who are building their names as well as our country’s pride,” said Sunway Malls and Theme Parks chief executive officer HC Chan.

“We now have Julian Yee, Malaysia’s first figure skater to qualify for the Winter Olympics last year, and we look forward to more young talents competing and crafting their names internationally as professional athletes.

“In the coming years, the Sunway Pyramid Ice Academy will continue to nurture more young skaters to represent the nation.

“We are proud to have trained more than 6,000 ice skaters through our academy. It’s through the academy that we can continue to train more figure skaters for the country,” he added.

After this competition, skaters will start preparing for the prestigious Skate Asia competition which will take place in Malaysia next year.
